Stickergate pt. 1 May 16, 2008

So, this is one of the best stories of my life but I’ve never blogged it. Not sure why. To this day, people will randomly start talking about the sticker incident of ’02, but since I was an intern at the time noone remembers or knows it was me. So here it is, for the first time in blog form. Stickergate.

I started my internship with Radio 104 about 6 years ago and was definitely the annoying intern who did anything to show up his fellow interns. I would pick up extra events, do more office hours, stay late, get there early, bang the assistant promotion director, you know, whatever it took. Apaprently, I did so well in putting myself above the other interns that when a young buck named Chris Graham was hired he though I was his boss. (side note, I actually hated Chris when I first met him because he didn’t have to intern and was given the job I was busting my ass for. Things have since changed)

After 3 months of glorious interning for free I was set to be hired. I was told to come in and fill out paperwork. This was December 23rd. It was a Monday, I remember this because I still lived at home and Monday was garbage day. More on this later.

Now, here I am filling out my paperwork, all stoked for my new gig when the dept head comes in complaining about how there are WCCC (another radio station, whose listener is usually found at a heating / air conditioning school) stickers all over the signs near the mall.  He sayd someone should go do something about it. Then half the dept looks at me. Then someone hands me a pile of stickers. So I go exactly where I want to be 2 days before Christmas, the mall.

I get to the mall and sticker the hell out of the off ramp, the street leading to the mall and a few other surrounding areas. I need to note, I only covered up stickers that were already there. I didn’t put any ‘new’ ones up and I was on foot so I’m not holding traffic up by pulling over. I finish up and head back to my car when a cop stops me. She is super cool, and just wants to know what I’m doing.

“Well ma’am, I’m covering up the competition’s bumper stickers with my own”

She thought it was funny but wanted to confirm I worked for the radio station. I give her the name of my superiors. I also made sure to note than in my travels I kept the backs of stickers in my pockets as not to litter. She tells me that the stickers I have aren’t offensive, so there shouldn’t be any problems, another officer just wants to talk to you..

Cool.

So I make my way to the Mobil station across the street where I’m told to wait. New cop pulls up.

“Have a seat in the car” says he.

“Fuck” says I.

…to be continued*

*I hate doing this, but I wrote the whole thing out and it spans many pages. So, deal.

I’m glad I don’t hate you anymore either. Is DJ Mitchell that dude that worked all the important events and would get autographs to send to his nephews in Cali?

hahaha I TOTALLY remember that and I remember Brett going “you should go with Tim, there are tons of stickers that need to be covered!” and Bill told me to stay because there was like a million other things to do. Apparently I was supposed to be your accessory to the crime. LOL. Good thing I wasn’t–I was 16 hahaha; but then again that woulda been real bad ass of me when I was a punk.
